Assam Congress in-charge and Alwar MP, Jitendra Singh said that tickets for contesting the elections would be given only to those who worked in the field.
Addressing a party meeting at the district library in Jorhat, Singh said it was time for party workers to meet different sections of people at the block and mandal levels to understand their problems and know what they want.
“Once you start working at the grassroots we will come and give you the ticket. You need not come to us seeking for the Congress party ticket to contest the elections,” the former Union minister said.
The Congress manifesto for each state would be different and based on what different groups of people in each assembly constituency wanted.
“The demands of different sections of people from each constituency would form the Congress manifesto of each state,” he said.
Singh said the mood in Assam is such as though the polls are set for this November and not for March next year. People of all categories seem to be waiting to oust the present government, though big industrialists may side with it.
The main reason behind this was the state government’s divisive politics to differentiate between the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys.
Alleging large scale corruption by the BJP, he said the money would flow to purchase votes, but the public would not be bought this time.
Spreading canards has been a favourite ploy of the ruling party and its supporters, who are apt at uploading any falsehood in social media just to pull down a leader of the opposition, he said.
Skyrocketing prices of essentials goods and huge power bills that the public has to pay indicates that the government has failed on several fronts.
Enquiring whether the Majuli to Jorhat bridge has been constructed, he said the BJP government has failed to fulfill the promises it made during the Assembly elections five years ago.
