The Assam Congress has demanded for a special Assembly session to discuss the issues of rising cases of crimes against women and construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP).
Speaking about the Assam Congress’ demand, leader of opposition in Assembly – Debabrata Saikia alleged that cases of crimes against women have been on a steady rise in the state, “ever since BJP came to power in Assam in 2016”.
“Crimes against women have increased exponentially in the last five years. Questions are being raised in regards to the role of police and administration,” Saikia said.
Debabrata Saikia said that Assam Congress demands that a special law be passed for security of women in the state.

Saikia further said that the construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP) will spell disaster in the three districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, and Majuli.
Notably, the LSHEP is the biggest hydroelectric project to have been undertaken in the country thus far.
The LSHEP, being constructed near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, is likely to get completed by March 2023.
Saikia said: “Congress is not against big dams but wants safety measures and efforts addressing environmental issues.”
