Congress MLA Rajdeep Gowala.

The Congress on Friday expelled party MLA Rajdeep Gowala and former legislator Rumi Nath for a period of six years for “anti-party” activities.

“The Congress president has approved the proposal of the expulsion of Rajdeep Gowala, MLA, Assam, from the party for a period of six years for indulging in anti-party activities,” KC Venugopal, AICC general secretary (Organisation), said in a statement.

While Gowala is a party MLA from Lakhipur constituency, Nath represented the Borkhala LAC in the Assembly as Congress in Barak Valley of south Assam.

Gowala was allegedly hobnobbing with the BJP for some time.

BJP leader and Assam’s Health Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma had claimed a few months ago when Rajya Sabha elections were to take place that Gowala would be joining the BJP with some other Congress MLAs in the state.

Rumi Nath had grand media headlines on several occasions ever since she was first elected MLA as a BJP candidate in 2006.

A BJP MLA, she soon became close to the Congress and defied party whip to vote for the Congress in the March 2010 Rajya Sabha elections.

In 2011 she was re-elected on a Congress ticket and was in the news in 2012 for allegedly converting to Islam and marrying Jackie Zakir, a government employee, without even formally divorcing her first husband Rakesh Kumar Singh

Assam is slated to go to polls in April, 2021.
