Assam government has assured to extended financial assistance to Pinky Karmakar, a young woman from Assam’s Dibrugarh district, who represented India as the Olympic torchbearer at the London Olympics, 2012.

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked Tea Tribes Welfare & Labour Welfare minister Sanjoy Kishan to do the needful for extending all possible help to the Olympic torchbearer, said an official.

Pinky Karmakar on Thursday called on chief minister Sarma in Guwahati.

Minister Sanjoy Kishan and Doomdooma MLA Rupesh Gowala were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, chief minister Sarma gave responsibility to minister Kishan for providing all the possible facilities to Pinki.

26-year-old Pinky is now working as a daily wage labourer at Borborooah tea estate in Dibrugarh district and earning Rs 167 per day.

After her mother’s death and father’s overage, Pinky has been taking care of her family and she has a younger brother and two younger sisters.
