Action has been initiated for capacity expansion of Digboi refinery in Assam.
This was informed by union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
Notably, Digboi refinery, commissioned on December 11, 1901, is Asia’s first and oldest oil refinery.
Puri informed that Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has initiated action for capacity expansion of Digboi refinery from 0.65 million metric tonnes per annum to 1 MMTPA.
This was informed by union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a letter to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He said: “IOCL has also taken up the matter for increasing the existing Duliajan-Digboi crude pipeline capacity from 0.65 MMTPA to one MMTPA with Oil India Limited (OIL) to meet the crude requirement for the enhanced capacity of Digboi refinery.”
Puri also stated that the work for capacity expansion of Guwahati refinery is in progress.
“Further, the capacity expansion from one MMTPA to 1.2 MMTPA of Guwahati Refinery of IOCL is in progress and is expected to be completed by October, 2023,” the union minister said.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed happiness over the capacity expansion of the Digboi refinery.

“I am so happy to receive the letter from the Union minister about action on capacity expansion of Digboi Refinery,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Notably, CM Sarma, on September 23 this year, had written a letter to PM Narendra Modi urging him to consider capacity expansion of Digboi refinery.
