Cachar’s Manik Miya Barbhuiya is having sleepless nights since August 31, after finding his name missing from the final NRC list declared on that day.

Since then Barbhuiya has been running from pillar to post to find out as to why his name has been excluded in the final NRC list even after having an elaborate lineage to prove his Indian citizenship.

Manik Barbhuiya was a served a notice by the NRC authorities on June 26 earlier this year where he was asked to face a hearing on July 5.

Speaking to Northeast Now, Barbhuiya said, “One of my forefathers, Tanai Das, converted to Islam and changed his name to Tanai Miya. This was done much before the British arrived in India.”

“Four generations later, Cachar’s last king Govinda Chandra Narayana Hasnu honoured my great grandfather Haji Abbas Ali Barbhuiya with the ‘Barbhuiya’ title,” he further said.

“He had established his business and family here,” Manik Miya added further.

“During the British period, my great grandfather even visited the Mecca, for which he was honoured with the ‘Haji’ title,” further informed Manik Miya.

“A sealed document signed by a British official informing the same is also in my possession,” added.

“Later, a land record showing my grandfather of buying 77 bighas land in one single day in 1944,  was also produced before the NRC authorities,” said Manik Miya.

The land was purchased in present day’s Durganagar Part V area of Udharband.

“My name appeared in the draft of the NRC published on December 31, 2017, and also in the final draft released on July 30, 2018,” he said.

“But the exclusion of my name from the final NRC list published on August 31, 2019, has made me insane,” he further said.

“I hope my pleas are heard by the NRC authorities,” he said.

“To live with the foreigner’s tag even after knowing that my forefathers arrived here much before the British, won’t let me die in peace,” he further added.
