The Assam Cabinet, held at the office of the Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall on Wednesday, decided to merge the SEBA and AHSEC.

The decision of the Cabinet, chaired by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was revealed by the CM while addressing a press conference after the meeting.

Currently, the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) are functioning separately.

The decision to merge the two education boards in Assam has been taken in order to fully implement the new National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020).

The Assam Cabinet has decided to implement the 5+3+3+4 system in the state.

The Assam Secondary Education Act, 1961 (Assam Act, XXV of 1961) was passed to establish a Board of Secondary Education to regulate, supervise and develop secondary education in Assam.

The Board of Secondary Education, Assam, popularly known as SEBA, came into existence on March 14, 1962.

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), a state education regulatory board under the jurisdiction of the state education department, was responsible to regulate, supervise and develop the system of higher secondary education (classes XI and XII).
