Guwahati: A huge haul of suspected Burmese areca nuts worth Rs 20 lakh was seized at the New Bongaigaon Railway Station in Assam.

According to reports, the railway police team based on inputs seized the suspected items.

In total, the railway police team seized nearly 90 bags from the Rajdhani Express.

It may be mentioned that the nuts are banned in India and are often smuggled through various modes.

Sometimes, the smugglers tend to smuggle these areca nuts as local produce to evade the police and tax officials.

At times it is even reported that some nexus charges a hefty amount of money to pass the illegal nuts through Assam and Meghalaya.

Sources say that around Rs 25 lakh is charged for a full truckload to be passed through Assam.

The source of the items, however, is Myanmar. The items are said to be kept stored in godowns at the Assam-Mizoram border.
