The Flying Squad Team (FST) in Mangaldai election district on Wednesday seized a sum of Rs 26 lakh from a place under Dalgaon police station in Darrang.

The seizure of such a huge amount of money is significant in the run-up to the Assam Assembly elections 2021.

The bundles of money were recovered from a Swift Dzire car.

Executive magistrate Sarat Gogoi supervised the operations in the Dalgaon area.

“The person, from whom the money was seized, is a resident of Rajasthan’s Sikar district,” sources said.

“The person was traveling towards Kharupetia from Bechimari in the Swift Dzire vehicle, bearing Assam’s registration number, AS 01-AK-2344,” sources added.

However, the person failed to produce valid documents in support of the claim for the cash.

Till the filing of this report, Income Tax sleuths are investigating the matter.

The future course of action will depend on the findings of the preliminary investigation, sources said.

As per the Election Commission of India guidelines, a person, carrying cash more than Rs 50,000, will have to show valid documents.
