Congress’ Barhampur candidate for the Assam Assembly elections, Suresh Borah has filed nomination from the key Barhampur constituency on Friday.

Suresh Borah submitted his nomination papers before the Returning Officer at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Nagaon.

Suresh Borah was accompanied by top Assam Congress leaders including Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi and former State Minister Rakibul Hussain.

The Congress took out a massive ‘padyatra’ prior to the nomination filing of Suresh Borah.

A sea of people turned up for the ‘padyatra’.

Suresh Bora has claimed that several factors will lead to his victory in the Barhampur constituency.

Suresh Bora said, “There are many factors: anti-incumbency, no Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, non-fulfilment of promises. All these and many will lead to a Congress victory in Barhampur.”

“Remarkable support given by the locals to the Padyatra from Congress Bhawan, Nagaon to the DM Office during the nomination filing of Suresh Borah for Barhampur LAC constituency. These images convey the sentiment!” said Pradyut Bordoloi.

It is likely to be a direct fight between the Congress and the BJP for the Barhampur seat after sitting MLA and former Assam CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was denied ticket to contest from the seat by the BJP-AGP alliance.

Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is a 7-time MLA from the Barhampur constituency.

But the BJP-AGP alliance cited “non-winnability” factor of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta for denial of ticket.

Barhampur will go to polls in the second phase of Assam Assembly elections slated to be held on April 1.

Friday was the last day of filing nomination for the second phase of Assam Assembly elections.
