Various units of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Wednesday joined in anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests duirng Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.
AASU and the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) have launched the anti-CAA protests ahead of the Assam Assembly elections to protest against the BJP’s decision to go ahead with implementing the controversial CAA.
Modi arrived at Sipajhar constituency in Darrang district to address an election rally, where BJP has fielded former Asom Sahitya Sabha president Paramananda Rajbonshi.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal even termed CAA a ‘central act’ that will be implemented by all means.
The AJYCP will launch its state-wide anti-CAA protests on March 25, just two days before Assam goes for the phase one of the state assembly elections.
Phase one of the Assam Assembly elections will take place on March 27.
Meanwhile, the Darrang district unit of AASU observed an 11-hour long hunger strike demanding scrapping of CAA at the ASTC campus in Mangaldai.
AASU members also staged a protest at Dighalipukhri in Guwahati, shouting slogans demanding scrapping of CAA.
The BJP state and central governments’ resolve to go ahead with CAA is bound to act against them in the ensuing elections.
AASU activists also took out bike rallies in different parts of the state on March 20 to protest against the act.
