Child marriage in Hojai

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Hojai with the help of Childline and police foiled another child marriage attempt in Assam’s Hojai district on Sunday.

Like earlier occasions, on a tip-off the DLSA, Hojai carried out an operation against child marriage at Daboka Budhigaon under Akashiganga police outpost in Hojai district.

The DLSA, Hojai taking the help from Akashiganga police and Childline, was able to save a girl child from being married before she attains the right age for marriage.

“Getting information that a marriage ceremony was being held Daboka  Budhigaon, a joint team of DLSA, police and Childline reached the spot,” said sources.

“The team immediately verified the documents of the girl and found her to be under-aged for marriage as per law,” said sources.

The rescued girl child was later handed over to Childline for counselling.

On March 13, the DSLA along with Hojai police and Childline foiled two child marriages at two different places in Hojai.

On February 26, a 15-year-old girl was rescued two hours before her marriage at Pamgaon village in Joraphukuri under Lanka police station in Hojai district.

On January 30 last, acting on a complaint received over 1098, the officers of the Childline along with Hojai police foiled the marriage of a 17-year-old girl at Bishnupally in Hojai.
