The Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Tuesday said that Assam contributed to India’s historic achievement of administering 88.09 lakh COVID-19 doses on day one of the country’s new vaccination guidelines.
Ten States have been listed by the health ministry as the top States for administering the maximum number of Covid19 doses on Monday when the Central government has started distributing vaccines free of cost to all States and UTs.
All people above the age group of 18 years will get free vaccination at the government vaccination centres.
“Madhya Pradesh top the list with 17,14,904 doses, followed by Karnataka 11,37,893 doses, Uttar Pradesh 7,46,858, Bihar 5,75,973, Haryana 5,15,276, Gujarat 5,15,009, Rajasthan 4,59,071, Tamil Nadu 3,97,189, Maharashtra administered 3,85,524 doses and Assam has administered 3,68,731 doses on Monday,” said Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan.
He further said that the country’s rural sector witnessed the maximum vaccination with 56,09,786 doses (63.68 percent) followed by 31,99,484 (36.32) in the urban sector.

Number of males administered with Covid19 vaccine was 47,24,283 (53.63) followed by 40,83,307 (46.35 percent) females.
Hailing the states for their contribution in achieving a historic milestone, Dr VK Paul, chairman of national task force on Covid19 said that this has proved that India has the capability to reach an even larger number.
“During polio immunization programme, we used to administer 6-8 crore doses on a single day,” said Dr Paul.
He, however, said that there is an urgent need to inspire females to get Covid19 doses.
