The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), on Monday, formed a human chain to lodge its protest against construction of a toll gate in the south bank approach road towards Bogibeel bridge in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

The members of AASU Dibrugarh, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district units protested for over two hours, which brought traffic on the busy highway to a standstill.

The AASU protestors, holding placards and banners, raised slogans against the Assam government for ‘approving’ construction of toll gate.

“We don’t want a toll gate in this area because most of the patients comes from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur to Dibrugarh for treatment and they will face problem. This is not a four-lane highway. Then why the government is setting up toll gate here,” said AASU Dibrugarh district president Abani Kumar Gogoi.

“Illegal construction of toll gate in Bogibeel approach road should be stopped immediately. The government should first construct the roads, which are in bad condition,” the AASU leader added.

Another AASU leader said, “The government has been unjust towards the people of these areas by allowing construction of a toll gate. We will continue our protest until the government withdraws its decision.”
