Police on Monday rescued seven Nepali girls from Silchar’s infamous brothel, popularly known as Lane 14.

The rescue of a girl of Nepali origin from the same brothel on July 14 last led an NGO from Nepal to rescue these seven girls.

A team of the NGO from Nepal – Shakti Samuha – arrived in Silchar on Sunday and with the help of Cachar Police carried out an operation on Monday evening.

“Out of the seven girls rescued, four are minors while the three others are below the age of 20 years,” said Dilip Koirala, a legal and training advisor of Shakti Samuha.

Outside the Silchar Sadar PS, Koirala told Northeast Now, “The rescue of one girl on July 14 led us to rescue these girls who were languishing in this infamous brothel.”

Koirala added, “The woman, who forced them into prostitution – Laxmi Tamang – a Nepali national, has also been arrested on the basis of an FIR filed by us.”

“All these seven girls were lured of a better life or having a better husband and were frisked from Agra in Uttar Pradesh to this brothel,” informed Koirala.

He also said, “The embassy has been notified about the rescue of these seven girls and once they are produced in the court at Silchar tomorrow, we will be able to take them back to their homes in Nepal.”

Koirala informed that NGO Shakti Samuha was formed with 15 trafficked girls out of 128 who were rescued in 1996 from various brothels in Mumbai.

“Not just in Silchar, such operations are carried out on a regular basis throughout India,” said Koirala.
