At least seven people were injured when a bus carrying stranded workers from Manipur hit a tree at Bakalia in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.
The bus bearing registration No AS01-EC-9080 met with the accident on NH 36 near Bakalia police station in the morning at 8.
According to sources, the mishap took place as the driver of the bus lost control and hit a tree.
The 7 people, who were injured in the mishap, have been identified as Meher Uddin, Azad Mandal, Ajijul Mandal, Bolen Das, Ser Ali Sheikh, Hafejuddin Sheikh and Ataur Rahman.
The bus with 17 passengers, most of whom are workers, was on the way to its destination.
The bus had permission from the deputy secretary (home) to the Manipur government.
The injured were administered first aid at Bakalia Community Health centre (CHC) and sent to their destinations after another bus was arranged by the authority.
Meanwhile, a batch of 10 workers from Diphu Government Boys HS School relief camp were released and sent back to their homes at Dalimbari in West Karbi Anglong on Monday.
This was informed by the in-charge of the camp, Amit Engti.
The workers came from Kohima and Dimapur in Nagaland due to the nationwide lockdown imposed in view of COVID19 pandemic.
On May 9, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) authority sent buses to pick them up from Bokajan, the town bordering Nagaland.
They were brought to Diphu and kept in the relief camp.
The workers were screened and found medically fit on Tuesday.
A mini bus from Dalimbari reached Diphu Govt. Boys HS School relief camp on Tuesday morning to take the workers back.
“At present there are 17 workers in Diphu Govt. Boys HS School relief camp and 94 others at Diphu Polytechnic relief camp,” said Amit Engti.
“Among the migrant workers, 111 are from Bihar,” Engti said.
Karbi Anglong election officer Jintu Bora, who is in charge of the relief camps, informed that special trains have been announced by the government to facilitate stranded migrant workers.
But the district administration is not going to provide the train fare.
