A six-year-old minor girl was allegedly raped by a 33-year-old neighbour in Bokajan last Saturday.
The incident took place in the Sukhanjan locality under Bokajan Police Station in Karbi Anglong district.
The incident came to light when the victim narrated her ordeal to her parents who later informed the locals on Sunday.
The accused who was absconding after the incident was nabbed by locals and was handed over to the police on Monday.
Police have recorded the statement of the victim and a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered against the accused.
The victim girl is in a state of shock following the incident.
The accused allegedly entered the house of the victim on Saturday evening and forced himself on her.
The accused have been identified as Promod Yadav, a resident of the same locality in Sukhanjan.
“Both the parents of the victim are daily wagers and arrive home late. There was no one in the house when the accused attempted to rape the victim,” said a police official.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage in the area.
