The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) has opposed creation of new districts out of Karbi Anglong.

The BJP government is allegedly planning to create two more districts dividing Karbi Anglong district.

The reported plan is to create new districts of Bokajan and Howraghat.

On February 11, 2016, Karbi Anglong district was bifurcated and a new district – West Karbi Anglong – was created.

West Karbi Anglong, headquartered at Hamren and Karbi Anglong, headquartered at Diphu, are parts of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) ruled by the BJP.

“ASDC has resolutely opposed the clandestine move of the BJP government to create two new districts of Bokajan and Howraghat out of the Karbi Anglong East district,” the ASDC said in a release.

ASDC said the “step would constitutionally and legally obstruct the creation of Autonomous State as enshrined under article 244 (A) of the Indian constitution”.

The organization said the move of the BJP government is in line with the “secret policy of the RSS to break Karbi Anglong into pieces”.

ASDC said the BJP government is making a “calculated move” to achieve this “narrow and mischievous political game.”

It may be mentioned that there was an agitation for creation of a separate district by merging Nambor area in Golaghat district into Bokajan sub-division of Karbi Anglong.

The Bokajan District Demand Committee (BDDC) on Oct 30, 2018 marched demanding declaration of Bokajan sub-division as a district for all-round development and peaceful existence of the non-tribals.

The release said “leaders like Dr. Numal Momin, BJP MLA and other disruptive elements were at the rear” of the agitation.

Karbi Anglong district is bounded by Golaghat district on the east; Nagaon and Golaghat districts on the north, Meghalaya and Morigaon district on the west and Dima Hasao district and Nagaland on the south.
