Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu while attending a public meeting at Yingkiong district headquarters of Upper Subansiri district on Sunday dwelt at length the present situation arising out of the contamination of the water of the Siang river.

He informed the people on steps taken on issue of Siang river turning muddy. The Chief Minister also said that a report on the ground situation has been sent to the Centre.

Khandu on Saturday had inspected the Siang river near Yingkiong, where the water had turned muddy and black, making it unfit for drinking and also posing serious threat to the aquatic life.

The Bogang Students’ Union had threatened recently to launch a mass agitation if the central and state governments do not take steps to check the contamination of the Siang river owing to alleged upstream construction carried out by China.

He also said that no other dams will be built on River Siang honouring the sentiments of the local people. While addressing a public rally at Along, the Chief Minister has assured the locals that his government has already forwarded this message to NITI Ayog.

He also said that he had already asked the centre to take up the matter with China.

The Siang is the principal constituent of the mighty Brahmaputra and flows as Yarlung Tsangpo in southern Tibet before becoming the Brahmaputra in Assam.
