Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, security forces on Saturday recovered a huge cache of illegal arms including AK series rifles in Kokrajhar district.

The arms were recovered from the jungle area from Dighilipara in Bichmuri area of the district.

Based on intelligence input, Kokrajhar police with para-military forces jointly launched an operation in the jungle of Bichumari on Saturday night.

During operation, the security forces recovered the arms, including two 56-caliber rifles, two magazines, a revolver and 29 rounds of ammunition, which were kept concealed underground in the jungle.

The recovered weapons were identified as those of former militants, said Special Police DGP (TAP) and BTAD ADGP (in charge) LR Bishnoi.

So far, 60 weapons have been recovered by the Kokrajhar police this year.

Earlier on March 10, a team of Chirang Police recovered AK series Rifle & ammunition, 7.65 mm Pistol with ammunition and 9 mm Pistol with ammunition today from inside Chirang Reserve Forest.

Bishnoi said all sorts of measures will be taken to make the Assam Assembly elections peaceful.
