With the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 continuing across the state, about 15 BJP MLAs met Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday and urged him to open channel of communication with protesters.

The BJP legislators including Padma Hazarika, Prasanta Phukan, Rhituparna Baruah and others urged the chief minister to take a stand for ensuring that Assamese language continues to be the state language and that there cannot be any threat to it.

“Large csale protests are there across the state over the citizenship law. It is our responsibility to make the people understand the reality. We should put in efforts to contain the situation rather than aggravating it,” said BJP legislator from Lahowal, Rhituparna Baruah.

“Some ministers have incited and hurt the people by their comments. We have sought chief minister’s intervention. I will abide by what Supreme Court says on CAA. If I resign will CAA be revoked? However, if people of my constituency ask me to resign I will do,” BJP legislator from Sootea constituency, Padma Hazarika said.

“We have asked the chief minister for speedy implementation of the clause 6 of Assam Accord, which is the soul of Assam Accord.

“Clause 6 stipulates constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people,” he added.

BJP MLA from Dibrugarh, Prasanta Phukan said that they met the chief minister on Thursday and requested him to take up with Centre the issue of granting of scheduled tribe status to six communities — Moran, Motok, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi, Tea tribe and Tai Ahoms.
