The Dibrugarh unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Thursday formed a human chain in Dibrugarh demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Assam.
The Inner Line Permit (ILP), which is a travel permit, was first introduced by the British under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations Act, 1873.
States that come under the ILP ambit require all outsiders, including Indian citizens from other states, to intend to visit or stay there to obtain permits that mention their duration of stay and places of visit.
AJYCP Dibrugarh district unit general secretary Priyabrat Gohain said, “ILP is a long pending demand and for the past several years, we have held several protest programmes across Assam for the implementation of ILP.”
“We demand the introduction of Inner Line Permit in Assam as it is the only foolproof way to protect and safeguard the interest of the indigenous people of Assam,” Gohain said.
He said, “The other northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur already have this system. In Assam, the influx of migrants from other states is posing a serious threat to the indigenous population. ILP is the only solution in the present scenario.”
The student organisations of Meghalaya have also been demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in their state since long.
