Ahead of the Assam Assembly election, Police on Tuesday night recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in lower Assam’s Baksa district.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police led by Baksa (HQ) DSP Pranab Kalita launched a search operation at the Medhaghat area under the Barama police station in Baksa district.
“During the search operation, the team recovered one M series rifle with magazine, one revolver and 46 rounds of live ammunition,” said DSP Kalita.
The arms were concealed deep inside the ground in Kharua area, he said.
Baksa district is under Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and the Assembly election in the district is slated for April 6.
Some leaders of the disbanded National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) led by MD Batha have recently formed a new insurgent group to revive the armed struggle.
A 30-member team returned to the jungle and floated the new insurgent group, the National Liberation Front of Boroland (NLFB).
The Centre and the Assam government’s indifference to the Bodo issue made them return to the jungles and take up guns again for their rights, the outfit had said in a statement.
