Former Assam chief minister and senior AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has said that his party may snap ties with the BJP.
“We are mulling over option of withdrawing support from government in Assam,” Mahanta told India Today.
Mahanta also expressed his displeasure over his party’s support to Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
“It was unfortunate that we voted in favour of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha,” said the former chief minister.
He further said the prime minister and home minister should think about the people of Assam and the act should not be implemented here.
“We will not allow this act in Assam,” he said.
Amid protests in Guwahati, the AGP has realised that people of Assam are angry with them for supporting BJP when the CAB was being passed.
All the three ministers led by party president and minister Atul Bora held a meeting at the residence of Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
After the meeting, BJP leader said, “Discussions are going on between us. We can’t say anything more at this point of time.”
