The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has restricted the entry of tourists and other civilians to the Rupsi airport due to the installation of some critical equipment.
Manager Corporate Communication of the AAI, Indra Mohan Kr. said this on Wednesday adding that process is on to install several critical air navigational and communication equipment inside the airport.
The Rupsi airport near Dhubri in Assam is being upgraded by the AAI and efforts are on to make it operational for the benefit of the people of the area.
“The construction works have gained momentum to commission Rupsi Airport shortly and are near completion,” he said.
“Now several critical air navigational and communication equipment are being installed inside the airport,” he further added.
“The works related to critical installations for flight operations are in progress,” he further said.
“So it has become inevitable to give topmost priority on security-related aspects of the airport,” he said.
“In view of the above, the AAI has felt that it is necessary to restrict entry to all tourist and the visitors inside Rupsi Airport premises, Kumar further added.
The AAI is the main stakeholder to operate Rupsi Airport along with the state of Assam.
There has been a demand from a wide section of people residing in Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Goalpara and Chirang districts in Assam and the Garo Hills in Meghalaya for the revival of Rupsi airport.
Residents of all these areas need to travel to Guwahati for air connectivity.
The AAI is developing this airport under the Regional Connectivity Scheme, UDAN of the Central government.
