Dibrugarh police arrested 43 persons for vandalism and violence during anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Sreejith Tiraviam said that 43 people had been arrested so far in connection with violence and vandalism during anti-CAA protests.

“More persons involved in violence are likely to be arrested. We are examining the CCTV footage and video evidence thoroughly. We will take strict action as per law against the culprits,” SP Tiraviam said.

Normalcy has gradually returned to Dibrugarh district, which witnessed large scale violent protests against the CAA.

Curfew was relaxed for 14 hours on Thursday from 6 am to 8 pm in the district.

The Dibrugarh district administration has informed that the office of the Circle Officer, Chabua Revenue Circle will be functioning temporarily from the office building of Model Rural Health Traning Research Unit near RHTC, Chabua from Thursday until further order.

The official works were stalled at the office of circle officer of Chabua Revenue Circle after it was set-ablaze by anti-CAA protesters.

Besides the office of the circle officer, several other government installations were destroyed by protesters in Chabua.

“Things are becoming normal in Dibrugarh after bandh and protest against CAA. We have witnessed worst days in Dibrugarh after sporadic violence reported from the district. We don’t want to see such terrible days again in Dibrugarh,” said Nirmal Konwar, a resident of Dibrugarh.

On the other hand, four students from the Delft University of Technology also known as TU Delft from Netherlands, who were stuck in Dibrugarh during the recent protests, on Thursday emailed the Dibrugarh DC thanking the district ddministration for helping them out and ensuring their safe passage for the Netherlands.

The students, who were in Assam for some research project, had stuck in Dibrugarh during the protests.

They informed the DC that they had safely reached Netherlands on December 17.
