The damaged bus that was carrying the home guards from North Lakhimput to Hailakandi

Two persons died and 34 more were injured when a bus carrying home guards from North Lakhimpur to Hailakandi fell into a 90 feet deep gorge at Bandarkhal in Dima Hasao.

A total of 39 home guards had been on their way to Hailakandi on poll duty for the Assam Assembly elections on Monday afternoon.

The vehicle bearing the registration number of the bus is AS07FC0097 fell into the gorge after it skidded off a bad hilly road at Bandarkhal.

The two deceased had died on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Papu Bhuyan, the driver of the bus and Hemkanta Gogoi, a home guard.

While Bhuyan hailed from Panbari, Chauddhapunia in Narayanpur, Gogoi was a resident of Borchapori in Azad in Assam’s Lakhimpur district.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Silchar.

According to sources, the condition of two home-guards, Polash Bora and Tulan Gogoi is critical.

Bora is a resident of Hindu-Mazgaon in Seajuli and Gogoi a resident of Pratapgarh in Kadam.

A pal of gloom prevailed in Lakhimpur district following the news of the tragic bus accident that the carried security personnel for poll duty in the Barak Valley.

The police fraternity also mourned the death of the two people.
