One person was killed while another went missing following a boat mishap that occurred in river Kacharijhar under Assam’s Darrang district on Friday afternoon.

The body of 38-year-old Tarun Kalita (38), a resident of Devananda village in Sipajhar of Darrang district was fished out by State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel on Saturday afternoon.

Tarun Kalita along with one of his neighbours, 42-year-old Ananta Kalita, remained missing since Friday afternoon following the boat mishap.

Ananta Kalita has remained traceless till the filing of this report.

On Friday evening, a country boat, carrying 10 passengers from the farm land in the other part of the river back to Kacharijhar ghat, capsized before reaching its destination.

All the other passengers except Tarun Kalita and Ananta Kalita escaped the mishap.

Senior officials of the Darrang civil and police administration along with a SDRF team rushed to the spot and started search operations.

Following washing away of the bamboo bridge on the river by swollen waters recently, a section of farmers of Devananda village of Sipajhar used to regularly visit the other side of the river (a semi-course of river Brahmaputra) for farming in small country boats amidst high risks.

Friday was also not an exception.

As the villagers were returning back home like the other days, the mishap took place as the boat capsized.

The incident has cast a pall of gloom in the entire Devananda village area.
