GUWAHATI: Over 1.59 lakh people in Assam have been declared as ‘foreigners’ thus far.

This was informed by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (February 12).

Besides, another 96,000 people in Assam have been marked as ‘doubtful’ (D) voters, said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Furthermore, the Assam CM said that as many as 100 Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs) are currently functional in the Northeast state.

Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs) deal with the citizenship issue of D-voters in Assam.

The Assam chief minister made this statement while responding to a query raised by AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam in the state’s assembly.

“1,59,353 people have been declared as foreigners by FTs till December 31, 2023,” informed Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The FTs have disposed of 3,37,186 cases till the end of last year and 96,149 cases are pending before various FTs, he added.
