The largest inhabited island of the world, Majuli, again made headlines after a woman gave birth to a baby on a road of the island.

Earlier, media reports highlighting patients being taken to the hospital in the island on cart (thela) due to lack of ambulance rocked the State.

This time, a pregnant woman, Aimoni Payeng, who went to the Garmur Pitambar Dev Goswami Civil Hospital in Majuli for check-up on Wednesday, asked by the doctors to return home and get admitted four days later stating that she had more days for her expected delivery.

Aimoni is a resident of Pathrisuk village in Lakhimpur district and the hospital is four kilometers away from her village.

But on the way to return home, she felt severe labour pain at Pathori Ghat and sat on the road.

On the other hand, the other women who also went with the pregnant woman failed to control the situation as rains accompanied by winds started to hit them.

They also tried to contact with the doctors and nurses but failing in their attempts, the Aimoni gave birth to a baby boy on the road with the help of the other women.

To keep both the baby and its mother safe from rains, they were covered with two CGI sheets for some times and were later the mother along with the baby were taken to the hospital.

The incident has shocked everyone of the island and across Assam.

It may be mentioned that Majuli was upgraded as a district after Sarbananda Sonowal won from the island in the Assembly polls 2016 and became Chief Minister of the State.

But the State Government has miserably failed to end the plights of the people of the island.

According to reports, the baby has been named as ‘Sangbadik’ as two of scribes came forward to mobilize women to help the pregnant woman so that the baby is safely delivered.
