The 149th birth anniversary of Bhubaneswar Sadhu Thakur, of the Vishnupriya Manipuri community, was celebrated with great pomp and joy in Silchar on Friday.

To mark this occasion, Govardhan puja was first performed on Thursday morning, followed by recitals and kirtans all through last night. On the morning of Friday, a colourful parade was taken out on the streets of Silchar adding to their colourful festivities.

Vishnupriya Manipuri girls clad in white dhoti and turbans, beat the drums and clamp bells on the road, and danced rhythmically to build up the crescendo of this event.

This breathtaking view was also adorned by womenfolk of this community who dressed in their traditional attire, especially in saris of pink and blue colours, which made the day for every bystander.

Talking to Northeast Now, Swapan Sinha, a leading citizen of their community, informed, “We have curved out a long list of programs to mark this auspicious day. After a puja on Thursday, followed by recitals and kirtans, today we have brought out a colourful procession. In the afternoon, Forest Minister of Assam, Parimal Suklabaidya, MLA from Silchar Dilip Kumar Paul and MP from Silchar, Sushmita Dev, would grace our functions at the ashram situated in Tarapur. Feast and prasad for the followers of Bhubaneswar Sadhu Thakur would also be served out there.”

Swapan Sinha added, “A grand cultural night would bring an end to the 149th Birth Anniversary of Bhuvaneshvar Sadhu Thakur today. The religious festivities this year, is just a prelude to the grand celebration that we are planning next year to celebrate Sadhu Thakur’s 150th birth anniversary, said.
