The president of Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee, Dwipen Pathak resigned from his post on Thursday in protest against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee stance over NRC update exercise in Assam.

TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead people of Assam by spreading rumours about the recently published final NRC draft. She never took interest in any issues pertaining to Assam and now she is all interfering, Pathak said after resigning from his post.

Pathak represented Hajo constituency in the Assam Assembly as Trinamool Congress legislator from 2011 to 2016.

Earlier on Wednesday, disappointed over Banerjee’s remarks on the final NRC draft, two Assam TMC leaders–Diganta Saikia, Pradeep Pachoni— quit the party saying that the West Bengal Chief Minister has been commenting and slamming the NRC ‘without any knowledge’.

They also alleged that Mamata Banerjee is attempting to divide the state, adding that they don’t want to stand behind her.

Launching a scathing attack on Narendra Modi government over the NRC in Assam, Chief Minister Banerjee on Tuesday had said people are being victimised to win elections and it would lead to a bloodbath and civil war.

Addressing a conclave by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India here, Banerjee alleged that names of people having valid documents were not included in the NRC and the exercise was being carried out with a political motive.

She has also sent a team of TMC leader to Assam to speak to the people who were left out from the final draft. The team immediately after landing at Silchar Airport stopped by police resulting in a scuffle between the TMC leaders and police.
