Two mountaineers from Assam have successful scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest free-standing mountain in the world and the tallest peak in Africa.

Beating all odds, Shashi Prakash Roy and Chandan Das, from Guaripur of Changsari in Kamrup (Rural) disitrict on the outskirts of Guwahati successfully completed scaling the challenging summit which is around 4,900 metres or 16,100 ft from its base, and 5,895 metres or 19,341 ft above the sea level.

The duo siganalling their triumph had flown the ‘phulam gamosa’ atop Mount Kilimanjaro at the Uhuru Peak, located in Tanzania which has a height of 5895 metres or 19341 ft last month.

The weather conditions were also a major challenge for the Assam mountaineers as the temperature was close to minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Both Roy and Das are Guwahati based entreprenuers. They had begun their expedition early May.

Mount Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, ‘Kibo’, ‘Mawenzi’, and ‘Shira’, is a dormant volcano in Tanzania.

The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields.
