Ending tense moments and all speculations, the returning officer of Lakhimpur district on Wednesday announced the nomination papers, filed by Congress candidate Anil Borgohain for the 14 Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency, as ‘valid’.

Borgohian’s nomination papers were kept on hold by the district returning officer for more clarification till 5 pm on Wednesday.

Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Anil Borgohain was given a deadline till 5 pm on Wednesday to clarify and clear his nomination papers.

Following the presentation of some required information, Borgohain’s candidature was declared as valid by the Lakhimpur district election authority.

The Indian National Congress (INC) has fielded Anil Borgohain, a contractor against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Pradan Baruah.

Pradan Baruah is the sitting Member of Parliament in Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency.

Baruah, who won the Dhemaji seat in 2016 Assembly elections, resigned as MLA after being elected as MP in the Lok Sabha by-poll in Lakhimpur after Sarbananda Sonowal, who won the LS seat in 2014 parliamentary polls, got elected as MLA from Majuli constituency in 2016.

Earlier, reports stated that Borgohain was the only candidate whose nomination was adjourned till 5 pm on Wednesday (read March 27).

His fate hanged in balance as no one was sure whether his nomination papers would be accepted or rejected after the entire scrutiny process was over.

However, candidate Anil Borgohain along with the Congress workers and supporters heaved a sigh of relief after his nomination was declared valid by the returning officer of Lakhimpur district in the evening on Wednesday.

Congress candidate Borgohain filed his nomination papers for 14 Lakhimpur Lok Sabha HPC in North Lakhimpur on March 20, 2019.
