Jonbeel Mela which is known for the preservation of the centuries-old barter system has been cancelled this year as the COVID-19 situation in Assam seems to be deteriorating.
The mela (fair) is indigenous to the Tiwa Community in Assam and it is organised each year for three days.
The fair is held at the weekend of Magh Bihu at a historic place known as Dayang Belguri at Joonbeel in Morigaon district.

The jonbeel mela this year has been cancelled as the has been a spike in the COVID-19 cases in the state.
The organisers have called for the cancellation of the three day fair but to keep the tradition alive, around 100-150 people will be allowed to participate in the barter system.

The fair is the only event where the barter system is still practised.
