Assam government has set May 1, 2020 as deadline for the completion of solid waste management plant at Lekai in Dibrugarh district. Lekai is five km from Dibrugarh town.
On Tuesday, project director of Assam Urban infrastructure investment programme (AUIIP) Binod Sesan reviewed the the ongoing solid waste management plant at Lekai.
A review meeting was held at deputy commissioner’s office where deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, Dibrugarh Muncipal Board chairperson Soma Chakraborty, Binod Sesan and other officials participated and a discussion was held on Lekai Solid waste management plant.
Tarun Acharjee, an expert in solid waste management plant will look after the ongoing solid waste management plant at Lekai.
However, to set up solid waste management plant is one of the prime demands of the citizens of Dibrugarh and after the completion of the plant the residents of Dibrugarh will have relief from the garbage related problem in Dibrugarh. There is no scientific garbage disposal system in Dibrugarh. Presently, the wastes are dumped at Maijan in an unscientific way.
Last year, there has been a row between the locals and the district administration over the setting up of the solid waste management at Lekai. The local residents protested for not setting up of the project at Lekai. After that the district administration has sought out the issue with the locals.
In 2017, Assam government has sanctioned Rs 48.49 crore for the setting up of the solid waste management plant at Lekai.
For past several years, garbage were dumped at Maijan road in Dibrugarh which created problem for the local residents. The local resident comes out and stopped the DMB vehicle which carried waste and blocked the road several times in protest against the garbage dumping at Maijan.
Deputy ommissioner Pallav Gopal Jha said that Assam government has set a deadline on May 1, 2020 for the completion of solid waste management plant at Lekai. “Today a meeting was held at deputy commissioner’s office regarding the ongoing work of the solid waste management plant. We are sure that the solid waste management plant will solve the decade old problem of garbage disposable in Dibrugarh. In 210 bigha plot of land the solid waste management plant will be set up,” the deputy commissioner said.
