A Police Sub-Inspector (SI) attached to the Dudhnoi Police Station, about 40 km from Goalpara town, committed suicide by shooting himself on Saturday in his quarter.

The police official, identified as 55-year-old Upendra Nath Talukdar, who hailed from Patacharkuchi area under the Barpeta district, shot himself with his 9 mm service pistol presumably on Saturday night.

Talukdar’s blood-stained body was found on Sunday morning in his quarter. A bullet of his service pistol pierced his head and he immediately died on the spot.

Following the incident, high-level police officials rushed to the spot and in the prima facie probe, they termed the incident as a case of suicide. Later, the body of the police official was sent to the district civil hospital for post-mortem.

“Talukdar had joined in the service in Goalpara district after a promotion transfer in the post of SI back in December 2017. He had about five years’ service left. He was suffering from various diseases including diabetics. This has also been reported that he was undergoing treatment for depression,” informed Amitava Sinha, Superintendent of Police, Goalpara.

The Goalpara district police has condoled the death of Upen Talukdar, who is survived by his two daughters and a son. “We have lost a good officer and condole his untimely death,” added Goalpara district police chief Amitava Sinha.
