More than 13,000 people in 16 villages under three revenue circles of Assam’s Jorhat district have been affected by flood waters due to overflowing of rivers following incessant rains in the past few days.

Meanwhile, ferry services between Jorhat at Neematighat and several ghats of river Island Majuli have been suspended by the Inland Water Transport department with the Brahmaputra river in spate.

The service will remain suspended till further orders.

The river was flowing more than one metre (86.06 meter) over the danger mark (85.04) at Neematighat at 9 am on Tuesday and showing a rising trend.

Bhogdoi river, which has again flooded 12 villages at the Malowkhat area in west Jorhat, is however flowing at 87.3 metres, which is two metres below the danger mark (89m).

About 203 people have been evacuated and shifted to the Borbhetti LP School which has been converted into a relief camp.

Jhanji river at A.T. Road in Jorhat is flowing one metre below the danger level but with a rising trend.

A district administration official said that 12 villages under Jorhat West Revenue Circle, three and one under Titabar and Jorhat East Revenue Circles respectively have been hit by floods.

The official said that altogether 13,271 people along with 80 hectares of crop area, only in Titabar Revenue Circle, have been affected by the latest spate of floods.

The official further said that altogether 4260 big animals, 1550 small animals and under Jorhat West and Titabar Revenue Circles and 1650 poultry under only Jorhat West Revenue Circle have been affected by the floods.

Medical and veterinary department teams have been deployed in the flood-hit areas to prevent outbreak of diseases, the official informed.

The SDRF and NDRF are also kept in readiness to evacuate the affected if required.
