The incessant rainfall since the last few days has flooded several villages in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts in lower Assam.
The raising water of Gongia river in Kokrajhar district has eroded several hectares of land at Paluguri village in Gossaigaon subdivision.
The flood water had already eroded one Lower Primary school and 15 houses in the village and affected over 20 others families forcing them to take shelter in safer places since the last two days.
The villagers demanded boulder protection to stop the erosion.
The villagers said local MLA of 29 Kokrajhar LAC Rabiram Narzary had earlier visited the area and promised of boulder protection in the area but nothing has been done till date.
Majors rivers flowing through lower Assam from upstream Bhutan like the Gongia, Hell, Swrmanga, Saralbangha, Longa, Gaurang, Champamati and Beki were reportedly raising.
The scenario, however, improved slightly on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) administration and the district administration have been monitoring the flood situation.
According to the Kokrajhar district administration report the total number of villages affected in the district is 13 (under Bhawraguri Revenue Circle).
A total of 493.19 hectres of crop land has been affected in this year’s flood in the region.
These include 142,3 hectres in Gossaigaon, 85 hectres in Kokrajhar and 265.80 hectres at Dotma.
A total population of 1468 people has been affected by flood till date.
In the sole relief camp which is opened at the New Gambaribil LP School, there are a total of 110 inmates including 39 males, 31 females and 49 children.
