Flash floods created by swollen waters of New Siang and Lali rivers have affected about 11, 353 people besides submerging standing crops in 315 hectares area in Dhemaji.
New Siang and Lali rivers, which collect plenty waters from mighty river Siang in upstream Arunachal Pradesh, have created flash floods in Kobu-Chapori and Mesaki Chapori islands which fall under Jonai revenue circle in Dhemaji district
The first wave of flash flood in the easternmost part of Dhemaji district, which started on August 30 this year, inundated human habitations in Kobuchapori, Mesaki chapori, Bahir-Jonai and Galighat areas under the revenue circle and created havoc in these rural areas.
Surging water of New Siang and Lali rivers and other tributaries of the Brahmaputra entered 41 villages of Bahir-Sille and Bahir-Jonai, Gali Sikari and Ramdhan Panchayats and flooded the riverine areas.
Jonai sub-divisional administration has opened a relief camps (high platform) at Mesaki Rabha village where 183 inmates of 27 families are taking shelter.
The administration so far has distributed 153.18 quintals of rice, 29.37 quintals of dal, 8.81 quintals of salt, 9 packets baby food and 210 pieces tarpaulin besides other materials among the flood-affected people.
Though flood water is receding in the area, yet the situation is reported to be grim in Kobu Chapori and Mesaki Chapori area. The relief inmates are returning back to their flood-raved homes in their respective villages.
Jonai Circle Officer Manuranjan Payeng informed the medical and veterinary teams have been asked to conduct camps in the flood-hit areas, dealing with post flood woes. As such, officials from Public Health Engineering have been engaged to provide safe drinking water facilities in the affected villages.
However, no loss of human life or major loss of livestock in the flash flood has been reported from the affected sites so far.
The Member of Parliament (MP) from Lakhimpur HPC Pradan Baruah accompanied by local BJP leaders visited the flood-hit rural areas of Jonai on Wednesday and took stock of the losses and damaged caused by the flash floods.
Baruah also assured the people of proper rehabilitation measure from the end of the State Government.
