Assam filmmaker Roopa Barua’s documentary ‘Daughters of the Polo God’ recently bagged the ‘Best Documentary Short’ award at the New York Indian Film Festival 2019.
The 19th edition of the prestigious film festival was held in New York from May 7 to May 12.
Presented by the Indo-American Arts Council, the New York Indian Film Festival screens feature, documentary and short films of India to give a view of Indian life to the people residing in America.
The documentary narrates the story about the scenario of Manipur’s female polo players and the situations of the endangered ponies.
It depicts how the Manipuri women charges forward in a male dominated sport and develops a unique relationship with their ponies and tries their level best to participate in a polo tournament.
‘Daughters of the Polo God’ had also bagged the ‘Best Documentary Short’ award at the Equus Film Festival New York 2018 and the ‘Best Regional Film for Women Empowerment’ award at the Rajasthan International Film Festival in Janaury 2019.
It also bagged the Festival Directors Award at the the Equus Film Festival New York 2018
The documentary released in December 2018 had also been screened at various national and international places.
Filmmaker Roopa Barua who is a founder of a media company ‘Kahini Media’ has also created another award winning documentary called ‘Rider of the Mist’ which is about the 100 years old bareback racing tradition in Assam.
