Dhubri district in lower Assam registered a record increase of 18 per cent in student enrollment in public schools for the first time in 3 years, thanks to the team of NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) and district administration, Dhubri.
Data released by the Piramal Foundation (PF), a co-partner of Niti Aayog showed that a total 2,96,303 students joined public schools from Classes one to eight in the current academic year that began in January. This was an increase of over 45,000 enrollments compared to the last academic year which was around 2.5 lakh students joining public schools.
A concerted push by the Piramal Foundation, a co partner of Niti Aayog and the Dhubri district administration combined along with a growing people’s movement in favour of public schooling, has meant that for the first time, the number of students enrolled in lower and upper primary schools of the district has increased.
Ananta Lal Gyani, Deputy Commissioner, Dhubri told Northeast Now that these numbers are significant because over the last couple of years, the student population in government schools was dipping every successive year in the district.
In 2016, the total enrollments of students in Dhubri district was 2, 70,610 while in 2017,enrollment suddenly deceased and registered around 2,39,177 and slightly improved up to 2,51,224 registered enrollment in the year 2018.
Tanima Narayan, Dhubri District Representative of NITI Aayog said that in order to ensure 100 per cent enrollment and transition of students throughout the district, an initiative by the State Government was taken through organizing ‘Utsav Bidyarambha,Amar School –Amar Abhiyan’ from January 1 -5.

“The district administration and Education Department of Dhubri carried forward a series of activities for five days in six education blocks namely Agamoni, Gauripur, Golakganj, Chapor, Bilasipara and South Salmara of Dhubri district and focusing on enrollment as well as transition rate,” added Tanima Narayan, Dhubri District Representative of NITI Aayog.
The Gauripur education block in the district has recorded the highest enrollments with 85,396 students followed by Bilasipara with 77,058, Agomoni with 41,916, Golakganj with 38,286, South Salmara with 30,167 and Chapor education block recorded the lowest with only 23,480 enrollments.
