Ali Ai Ligang, the spring festival of the Mising community of Assam, associated with agriculture, specially with the beginning of the Ahu paddy cultivation is being celebrated across the State on Wednesday.

Assam Government under the aegis of department of Cultural Affairs is celebrating the festival centrally at Majuli. Day-long colourful activities began at the Jengraimukh HS School playground in the river island district.

An exhibition showcasing the cultural heritage and traditions of the Mising community has also been put up at the venue.

The exhibition is being formally inaugurated by Majuli Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is gracing the open session starting from 12 noon. Sonowal is the elected representative of Majuli Assembly constituency.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi is also expected to be present during the celebration that will highlight the folk culture and tradition of the Mising community.

Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Kumar Doley will also be present at the celebration.  Others who are expected to be present during the Ali Ai Ligang celebration are parliamentarians Pradan Baruah, Rameswar Teli, Kamakhya Prasad Tassa, legislators Dr Ranuj Pegu and Bhuban Pegu.

A cultural programme is scheduled later in the evening which will be inaugurated by former president of Mising Agom Kebang, Dr Bidweswar Doley.

Sonowal is expected to formally launch the boat ambulance service later in the day.

Meanwhile, the Majuli district administration has declared local holiday in the district on the occasion of Ali Ai Ligang on Wednesday to enable all residents to witness the celebrations.

All government offices, educational institutions, banks and other commercial institutions have remained closed on Wednesday.
