Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) late Monday (July 22) night said that it has arrested a middleman while accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh allegedly on behalf of an Inspector of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) of Assam’s Tezpur.

The Central investigating agency in a press statement said that on the basis of a complaint, it had registered a case against the accused Inspector, Rakesh Jangid, and the middleman, Aniket Pareek, a resident of Sonitpur district’s Balipara, on Sunday (July 21).

It was alleged that Inspector Jangid demanded an “undue advantage” of Rs five lakh from the complainant for the smooth functioning of his hardware store business.

The complainant alleged that Jangid compelled him to pay Rs two lakh, as part of the total demanded bribe amount of Rs five lakh, on July 12 this year.

It was also alleged that Jangid directed the complainant to hand over the second instalment of Rs three lakh “undue advantage” to the middleman Aniket Pareek.

Accordingly, the CBI laid a trap and caught Pareek red-handed while accepting the said “undue advantage” of Rs three lakh from the complainant on behalf of Jangid.  Pareek was immediately arrested and produced before the competent court.

Later, searches were conducted at the premises of the accused at Balipara and Tezpur in Assam, and Jaipur and Churu in Rajasthan, which led to the recovery of an “unexplained” cash amount of Rs nine lakh from the premises of Pareek at Balipara, besides other incriminating documents.

Further investigation into the matter is on.
