A female traffic police and her male colleague were allegedly “roughed up” by the wife of the Commissioner of Transport, Assam, Manoj Kumar, on October 16 last at around 9.30 pm at Hengrabari in Guwahati while Durga Puja celebrations were on.

The victim has been identified as Chayanika Bora, a constable attached with the Dispur Police Station, who was on duty in Hengrabari area on the night of October 16 last – the day of Mahasaptami.

Chayanika Bora has since lodged an FIR (Case No 3132/18) at Dispur Police Station against the wife of the bureaucrat. On the other hand, Manoj Kumar has also lodged an FIR (Case No 3131/18) against Chayanika at Dispur Police Station. No one has been arrested till the time of filing of this report. Further investigations are on.

Police sources informed Northeast Now that Chayanika was assigned duty on Hengrabari road to control crowd and movement of vehicles. “When Chayanika stopped Manoj Kumar’s family from crossing the road, she was questioned by Kumar’s wife and that led to an argument,” police sources said.

Police sources further stated, “She was doing her duty. She had to stop the pedestrians at that moment and she did just that. It is unfortunate that she was assaulted along with another constable at the same place.” Police sources also informed that another traffic constable Bidyut Saikia of Dispur Police Station was also “roughed up” by Kumar’s wife at the same place on the very same day.
