An environment activist here has allegedly faced threat from mining lobby for filing complaints to authorities against illegal mining around Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.

Activist Rohit Choudhury has alleged that some ‘rich and powerful persons involved in illegal mining around Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve’ are trying to cause physical harm to him and his family members.

Choudhury, a resident of Bokakhat area in Golaghat district, has already lodged an FIR with the Bokakhat police station in connection with the incident. He has also submitted copies of the FIR to the Chief Secretary and the State DGP.

Choudhury said he has been working for the conservation of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve and also on various environmental issues like the conservation of the famous wetland Deepor Beel, among others.

Several of the cases filed by him before the NGT and Central Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court on such issues are now at various stages of legal scrutiny.

Subsequent to a petition filed by Choudhury, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), New Delhi, on April 20, 2018, recommended to the Chief Secretary of the State steps to stop stone mining activities in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong landscape.

Following this, the mining lobby exerted pressure on Choudhury to withdraw the cases he has filed before the Supreme Court and the NGT.
