The three-day Regional Agri Fair 2019-20 began at Pasighat, the district headquarters of  East Siang, on Monday.

The fair has been organized by the Central Agriculture University (CAU), Imphal at College of Horticulture & Forestry (CHF), Pasighat.

Arunachal Pradesh Assembly speaker P Dodjee Sona inaugurated the fair.

Attending the inaugural function as chief guest, speaker Sona said jhum cultivation practices adopted by rural farmers in the state is causing degradation of forest ecosystem.

He asked the farmers to adopt cultivation of fruits, vegetables and spices through organic way.

Speaker Sona tweeted: “Inaugurated the Regional Agri Fair 2019-20 organisrd by CAU, Manipur at Pasighat today.”

“I hope the 3-day mega fair will facilitate desired information among the farmers of our state about latest technical know-how in agriculture & allied sectors for sustainable development,” he added.

Among other dignitaries, CAU Vice Chancellor Dr M Premjit Singh and director (Farm & Information) of extension, ministry of agriculture and farmers’ welfare, New Delhi Dr S K Mishra graced the inaugural ceremony.

The theme of the agri fair is ‘Ecosystem approach of sustainable agriculture’.

The fair aims at bringing awareness among the growers about latest knowledge in the agriculture and allied sectors and demonstrate the innovative as well as feasible technologies before the growers.

It is expected that the fair will provide opportunity to the commercial horticulturists to interact with agriculture scientists and policy makers at one platform and to award the progressive growers for their excellent contributions.

The programme also includes show and competition on field crops fruits, vegetables, flowers.

There will a ‘farmer-scientists interaction’ on the second day.

The programme will come to end with valedictory function on Wednesday.
