Itanagar: A collaborative effort by local NGOs and the Itanagar Smart City Development Corporation resulted in the removal of 4,500 kilograms of waste from the Yagamso River’s Energy Park stretch in Arunachal Pradesh during a river cleanup drive held on Saturday.

The participating organizations, Youth Mission for Clean River (YMCR) and Abralow Memorial Multipurpose Society, not only focused on cleaning the river but also planted saplings of gulmohar and nahar trees along the bank to prevent soil erosion.

Itanagar Municipal Corporation Ward 6 Corporator Gyamar Taz applauded the NGOs’ dedication to keeping the Yagamso River clean. He expressed concern about the rising waste levels and urged Itanagar residents to dispose of waste responsibly.

“The Yagamso used to be a pristine river,” Corporator Taz said. “Unfortunately, it has become heavily polluted. We all have a responsibility to ensure a clean city and environment for future generations.”

YMCR Chairman SD Loda echoed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of maintaining healthy rivers. YMCR organizing secretary Keyom Doni provided the corporator with details about the NGO’s mission to clean the Yagamso and their various waste management awareness initiatives.

Doni elaborated that YMCR conducts monthly art and literary events for school children alongside door-to-door campaigns to educate residents near the river about proper waste segregation practices.
