As many as 5,970 illegal immigrants convicted in Meghalaya were deported to their respective countries in the last 46 years since 1972.
In a reply to an unstarred question in Assembly, State Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said out of 5,995 illegal immigrants convicted from 1972 to 2018, 5,970 were deported to their respective countries after completion of their sentence period.
The number of illegal immigrants detected and prosecuted during 2010 was 133, 156 in 2011, 268 in 2012, 169 in 2013, 74 in 2014, 71 in 2015, 115 in 2016, 34 in 2017 and only four till March, this year.
Conrad said that that 25 of them are still being lodged in various jails of the State till March 2018.
