Manipur Mizoram: 57-year-old sentenced to 20 years for raping minor

Imphal: A 28-year-old youth was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a Fast Track Court in Manipur under rape and cheating of the IPC section for having a forced sexual act on false promise of marriage.

The Court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crimes against Women on Monday sentenced Chongtham Dhurbajit Singh (28) s/o Ch Shyamsunder Singh of Nagamapal, Imphal for 10 years RI and a fine of Rs. 5,000 under Section 376 of IPC and additional Rs. 5000 under Section 417 of IPC. 

According to the Court’s order, in default of the fine, the convict has to undergo three months of simple imprisonment.

The Court also recommended providing compensation to the victim under the Manipur Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault Other Crimes 2023.

The court dossier states that the case was based on a complaint filed by the victim before Imphal Police Station in May 2018.

As per the complainant, she and the convict had been in love since May 2013 and the man sexually assaulted her several times and she got pregnant twice in 2015 and 2017.

The convict gave her pills to cause an abortion both the time she got pregnant on the false promise to marry her only after he built a house, she added that her ex-boyfriend, however, switched off his mobile phone and later got married to another girl.

In the course, the Investigating Officer framed a charge against the convict in December 2020.

During the trial of the case, the prosecution produced eight witnesses and other material exhibits before the Court.

After hearing Special PP A Sushila and the defence counsel during the final hearing of the case, the court observed that the prosecution had proven that the convict had raped the victim by giving a false promise to marry her.

The Court then announced 10 year RI to the convicted Chongtham Dhurbajit.
